Mars Base 1

Course Overview

In a hands-on adventure, middle-schoolers will ignite their interest in STEM and space and may even discover their future career working in space or on Mars! Students will learn what it takes to survive in space, with our trained and certified educators guiding them in the engineering design process to create part of their own space suit. They will also participate in a fun team challenge, working together to lead their own Mars rescue mission. These challenging activities will stretch students’ existing abilities and develop their growth mindset in a practical and immersive learning environment. Mars Base 1 is specifically designed for middle school students to participate at home online through live and interactive group lessons.  

There will be a certificate upon completion!

Background on Mars Base 1

Once a thriving planet featuring liquid surface water, today Mars is a cold, harsh and barren desert planet. It’s hoped that samples from the Mars 2020 Mission will prove that life once existed on Mars and could again. NASA is preparing to send humans to Mars on a scientific mission of discovery. Space scientists and engineers are now developing equipment including spacesuits and communications systems to ensure future astronaut safety as they work in the hostile Martian environment.  



  1. Introduction to human space survival through guided learning 

  2. Introduction to NASA's Deep Space Communications Network through guided learning

  3. Introduction to fundamental physics theories 

  4. Effective teamwork and student-driven inquiry into Mars rescue mission 

  5. Follow engineering design process to design and build elements of a spacesuit 

  6. Complete two challenges to test spacesuit design and learn physics theories 

  7. Summative presentation on Mars rescue mission

Course Outline
  • Critically evaluate the Mars environment and requirements for human space survival to develop an inquiry to design a Mars rescue mission

  • Apply the scientific method with curiosity and imagination to design elements of a spacesuit

  • Master fundamental physics theories and apply mathematic equations in practical activities

  • Collect, analyse and interpret data and Demonstrate strong problem-solving techniques to refine designs and overcome challenges faced

  • Communicate a clear understanding of NASA’s Deep Space Communications Network and basic physics theories in a proposed Mars rescue mission

  • Embody the practice of growth mindset principles

Learning Outcomes
  • Age-group Suitability: Ages 10-13

  • Small Class Sizes: Up to 20 students per class

  • Prerequisite Requirements: None

  • Class Format: Live online learning via Zoom. Practical activities by students at home. Interaction between teacher and students live online

  • Equipment Requirements:

    • Students required to supply various construction materials including everyday stationery items and household recyclables

    • A list will be provided upon course confirmation. 

  • System Requirements

    • A computer with a camera, mic, speaker (or headphones)

    • A Gmail account required for Google Class

    • An Internet connection and an internet browser

    • Zoom video conference application​​
